Get the “Queen’s Gambit” Look

The game of chess first originated around the sixth century in India and became wildly popular in Europe in the ninth century, with pieces representing military units. Today, the passion for chess has resurged and skyrocketed with the release of Netflix’s show The Queen’s Gambit. Based on the original American novel written by Walter Tevis in 1983, it follows the journey of Beth Harmon to become a chess queen and defeat her archrival Vasily Borgov. Not just popularizing this mind-boggling game, but the show also empowers women to move freely in worlds mastered by men.

According to Robb Report, the popularity of the show has caused a national chess board shortage. “The series’ wild success—over 62 million people have now streamed it—isn’t just limited to mass binge-watching: Chess sets are now selling out across the country. Indeed, eBay has reportedly seen a 215 percent rise in chess sales since the show debuted.”

For those looking to be like Beth Harmon and master the game, Cosulich Interiors & Antiques located in Suite 509 of the New York Design Center, The Gallery at 200 Lex, located on the 10th floor, and Plexi-Craft, Suite 914, have select chess boards still available.
